Pre-Season Friendly | Valley Road
Flixton FC rounded off their pre-season schedule in style with an entertaining 3-2 victory over Runcorn Town at Valley Road, producing another encouraging display ahead of the start of the North West Counties League campaign.
The Lions were rewarded for an energetic first-half performance as they took the lead, controlling possession well and moving the ball confidently through midfield. Alex Mortimer's side showed patience in build-up, creating chances through quick combinations before finding the breakthrough.
Runcorn responded after the interval to ensure an open and competitive contest, but Flixton continued to show real attacking intent. The hosts regained control with a second goal before extending their advantage once more, taking a deserved two-goal cushion into the closing stages.
Although Runcorn pulled one back late on to set up a nervy finish, the Lions stood firm to see out the victory and complete another positive afternoon in front of the Valley Road faithful.
Captain David Lynch once again led by example in the heart of midfield, while the defensive unit remained composed under pressure during the closing moments. Further forward, Flixton's movement and willingness to play on the front foot caused problems throughout the afternoon, with the attacking unit combining well to create numerous opportunities.
A Positive End to Pre-Season
The performance reflected the progress the squad has made over the course of pre-season. Flixton finished with:
-
58% possession
-
13 shots
-
235 completed passes
-
Three goals scored
The statistics underline a side growing in confidence with the ball. Nearly half of Flixton's possession was built through the middle third before progressing into attacking areas, while a 20% shot conversion rate highlighted the clinical edge shown in front of goal.
Defensively, the Lions also demonstrated resilience, recovering from Runcorn's spells of pressure and showing the character required to protect their lead in the final stages.
