Football Returns to Valley Road as Flixton FC Mark a Historic Homecoming with 3–2 Victory

There are football matches, and then there are football moments.

Saturday's inaugural Foxall Matthews Community Cup was one of those moments.

After 14 years away, first-team football returned to Valley Road as Flixton Football Club welcomed supporters back home for a day that celebrated the club's history, its community and its exciting future. The match day had been carefully designed to celebrate the rebirth of the club, with live entertainment, family activities, the opening of the brand-new clubhouse and the first opportunity for supporters to see the men's first team back where they belong.

The celebrations had actually begun the evening before, when former players and club legends gathered for a special Football Legends Evening. It was a chance to reflect on the rich history of Flixton Football Club while looking ahead to an exciting new chapter.

By midday on Saturday, Valley Road was once again alive with football.

Supporters arrived to live music from Here's To Us, while families enjoyed the Kids' Zone, food from Eastern Point, Ice Cream Bros and the opportunity to experience the club's brand-new clubhouse for the very first time. Throughout the afternoon, photographer and videographer captured the occasion as familiar faces returned alongside a new generation of supporters, all helping create a fantastic atmosphere around the ground.

Adding to the occasion was one of football's most recognisable voices, Alan Keegan, whose match day announcing helped build the excitement as kick-off approached and Valley Road filled with supporters ready to witness history.

Before a ball had even been kicked, the afternoon had already become a celebration of everything grassroots football represents.

The Foxall Matthews Community Cup honours the memories of Graham Foxall and Stanley Matthews, two men whose passion, dedication and commitment left lasting legacies at Trafford FC and Flixton FC respectively. The competition celebrates the values they embodied—community, friendship, respect and the volunteers who keep grassroots football alive.

Then came the football.

Flixton produced an encouraging performance to secure a 3–2 victory over Trafford FC, giving supporters the perfect start to this exciting new era.

The first goal of Valley Road's new chapter will live long in the memory, with Nonso Eze kicking off the competition with his first goal on the warm up to the new season. 

Among the standout performers was Leon Creech, whose outstanding display earned him the club's first Man of the Match award of the new era.

Speaking after the match, Creech admitted that while pre-season is often about building fitness and relationships, this fixture always carried extra significance.

"The first game of pre-season is always about building relationships and understanding each other as a team, but this one meant a little bit more. With the rivalry we've got with Trafford and everything today represented, it was really important for us to win."

He also believes supporters were given a glimpse of the style of football Flixton want to play this season.

"I think the biggest positive was seeing how we're starting to play together as a group. We showed it in spells during the first half, but especially after half-time you could really see what we're trying to do. We want to dominate the ball, play on the front foot and create chances, and I think we showed that in the second half."

For manager Alex Mortimer, the result was only one part of a much bigger picture.

With only a handful of training sessions completed, seven new players making their first start together and a new tactical system being introduced, the afternoon represented an important step forward.

"We've only had four or five training sessions together and we had seven new players starting today, so we're very much a work in progress. We also played a new shape that we've not used before, so there are still plenty of things for us to work on."

Mortimer acknowledged the challenge of opening pre-season against local rivals from the division above but was delighted with the way his side responded.

"It's not the easiest first game to have. You're playing local rivals from the league above, and ideally you'd have another few games under your belt before a fixture like this. But we came here wanting to win the football match, and that's exactly what we did."

While there is still plenty of work ahead, the Flixton manager believes supporters can already see the foundations beginning to form.

"I thought you started to see those relationships forming as the game went on, and that's really pleasing. There's still a lot to improve, but it's a positive platform for us to build on as we head towards the start of the season."

And despite the fixture being labelled a pre-season friendly, Mortimer admitted that victory always mattered.

"Nobody goes into a football match wanting to lose, and we're no different. Winning breeds confidence, so we're delighted to get the result."

However, for Mortimer, the biggest success wasn't measured by the scoreline.

It was measured by the people.

"More than anything, it was fantastic to see so many supporters back here at Valley Road. It was a brilliant day for the community, a fitting occasion for the Foxall and Matthews families, and great to see money being raised for local charities. That's exactly what this football club is about."
